Pianist Wan Rosalind Wong's playing is recognized for its poetic landscapes, passion, grit, and intellectuality. As the winner of many prestigious competitions, her performance career includes solo and chamber recitals at leading intellectual and artistic centers for performance in Los Angeles and throughout America.
Her debut album as a composer-pianist, "Fading In", is available everywhere, including spotify, bandcamp, and CDbaby. Rosalind's 2017 dissertation is titled, "Piano Performance and Musical Symbolism: Interpretive Freedom through Understanding Symbolist Aesthetics", which is a cross-disciplinary paper on performance aesthetics, art theories, musical hermeneutics, and music history. Her passion for expanding artistic thought culminated in her latest composition "Quixotic Q" (May 2017), which is scored for tape and improvised piano. "Quixotic Q" comments on the musical work's identity, illuminating the ipse and the idem of a musical work through the live improvisation that orients the audience's perspective at every turn. Each performance of this piece is explicitly unique.
Rosalind received her doctorate in Spring 2017 from the University of California, Los Angeles, under the tutelage of Inna Faliks. Prior to her graduate studies, she studied with Walter Ponce and Lorna Griffitt. Along with her education, summer festivals such as Aspen AMFS provided Dr. Wong with opportunities to work with maestro-pianists such as Byron Janis, Steven Osborne, Anne Schein, Gilbert Kalish, Rita Sloan, Gloria Chang, and Ingrid Fliter. She has a strong grasp of the piano chamber repertoire, following performances with the strings faculty at UCLA, as well as residencies with Lynn Harrell, Espen Lilleslaten, and Ellen dePasquale.
She has performed multiple concertos with orchestras, including Bartok's third piano concerto, Mozart's last piano concerto, Rachmaninoff's third piano concerto, Grieg's piano concerto, and Shostakovich's first piano concerto for trumpet and strings. She collaborated with the LA Jewish Symphony as well as Body Traffic, a contemporary dance troupe, in August 2018. She is the Henry Brittan and Maxwell Siemans Piano Chair at American Youth Symphony, a premier training orchestra under the baton of Carlos Izcaray.
Her diverse interests drew her to the accomplishment of triple degrees in the bachelors of arts: music, English, and communication studies. Mona Simpson, Debora Shuger, and James Franco are among her esteemed mentors in literature and creative writing.
